Nubbins's story
Meet Nubbins. This resilient little guy has a heart of gold. He was rescued from a backyard breeder, and was the victim of abuse and neglect. He came into the rescue in pretty bad shape from living in an outdoor pen all his life, never having proper vet care or nutrition, or even basic shelter from the elements. Nubbins was heartworm positive, had few teeth left, and was very thin. Its difficult to imagine anyone allowing a dog to live like this, but sadly these conditions exist all over the country in puppy mills and backyard breeders. Nubbins, and dogs just like him, are the fathers and mothers of so many of the puppies you see for sale in the pet store or online, and there are few laws in place to protect them.
That terrible life is now behind him...Hes been treated for heartworm, had a thorough dental cleaning with needed extractions, and has settled into his foster home. Hes being fostered with other dogs, and his foster mom describes him as a gentle soul who enjoys animal and human companionship. Hes very connected with his people, and sits with his foster mom on the couch and likes to curl up on her lap or chest. His foster mom picks him up and carries him around so he can get used to being touched and held, and more comfortable with people. He sleeps with them at night now, and likes to lounge in his favorite dog bed. From day one, he has been great with the other dogs in the home, and really seems to find comfort in pup companionship.
As hes settled in, Nubbins playful side has also emerged. He likes to romp in the backyard and just started barking at noises, acting like a normal dog and learning from his pack. He still wears a belly band to protect from marking, but we hope that subsides with time now that hes been neutered.
Nubbins is crate trained, mostly house trained (but will mark), great with other dogs, and very snuggly and affectionate one he gets to know you. Hes frightened of children and loud, sudden noises, but doesnt bark or bite, he just freezes up. As Nubbins has settled in he's gotten pretty good with meeting new people. He doesnt run up to greet you yet, but he will relax quickly if a new person visits and sits near him. We think he will need a little time to adjust to his new home, but will quickly charm his way into the hearts of his new family.

FOSTER UPDATE - 10/28/18
Nubbins has been in his foster home almost 2 weeks now and is living with both a large and small dog. His foster parents shared this udpate:
"Nubbins has been doing great. He always cleans his plate at dinner time. He sleeps through the night in his crate and hasnt shown any sign of separation anxiety when left home alone. He is warming up to us and has begun dancing in his crate when we let him out in the morning. Hes become comfortable enough to fall asleep on my lap. He is great with our dogs and other dogs, and very respectful to dogs who are not as social as he is.
Hes still uncomfortable being on leash; but I think were making progress. When we first took him in, he would freeze, noticeably shake all over, and refuse to move as soon as the leash was put on. Now, as long as you carry him over to a place where other dogs have been, he will slowly explore and do his business while on leash. So, in the short term, it is probably best if his adopter has a fenced yard while he learns what walking on a leash is all about.
We are seeing more of his personality with each day. He is showing more of the medium/low energy dog he will probably end up being once he gets truly comfortable in his surroundings. He doesnt bark much. Theres the occasional huff he emits when he objects to something (like being removed from someones lap), and the occasional woof he gives when hes been left alone for a while and is checking to see if anyone is around.
When in a group of dogs, Nubbins is playful and tags along with the other dogs. When given the yard and leash-free, he loves exploring on his own. While inside the house, in contrast, he tends to be more furtive: hell follow you, but if he sees you looking at him, hell run back to one of his safe areashis crate or a dog bed. We think that will change as we gain more of his trust. That said, he regularly falls asleep in your lap when placed there.
Update - 11/2/18
Nubbins had his daycare evaluation today. He passed with flying colors. He spent a full day there and had three group play sessions. He was very social with the other dogs, quickly made friends, and loved playing with them. He was quiet and very well behaved on the drive too and from as well.

FOSTER UPDATE - 11/28/18
"Nubbins walks on a leash now and has mastered stairs too! Both Mark and I have independently experienced it, so it's established!
Nubbins loves the company of other dogs, but he could be an only dog if he had a patient owner who understood that he takes time to warm pup. Another dog in the home would help him feel comfortable and secure, and to be less awkward, sooner. That said, we are confident that he'll reveal his charming and inquisitive self, eventually, whether or not there's another dog around.
His person just has to be patient and prepared for the affinity to develop gradually. Nubbins appears to take correction very seriously -- so gaining his trust, contemporaneously with curbing unwanted behavior* (with "unwanted behavior" being somewhat subjective), may prove to be challenging for someone who expects to promptly win him over with generally reliable methods of treats and affection. Once he warms up, he's a very sweet boy."
